pool safety fence around in-ground poolSpring is just around the corner, are you thinking of installing an in-ground swimming pool? Or give your existing pool a brand new look? Whether you want to install an in-ground pool or renovate an existing pool, it is important that you consider pool safety, especially if you have toddlers at home. You have to know all of the different requirements associated with installing a residential swimming pool. Aside from obtaining legal permits from your local municipality, you also need to set up a pool safety fence around your pool.

In New York, due to safety regulations, it is illegal to build an in-ground pool without a barrier or fence. Any outdoor residential swimming pool must have a barrier that will completely surround the pool and obstructs unsupervised access to the swimming pool. The spaces between the bottom of the fence and the ground must be less than 2 inches, and any opening should be small enough to prevent the passage of a small child.

It is also suggested that a self-closing and self-latching gate be installed. All pool gates should also be secured with childproof sufficient lock to prevent entry when the pool is not in use. You can also install a pool alarm to notify you should a child open the gate.

How Tall Should Pool Fencing Be And Why?

It is required that pool fences should be at least 48 inches or 4 feet high and must satisfy the requirements specified by local laws. The fence can be higher than 4 feet but not lower. This is to make swimming pools inaccessible to unsupervised children or unauthorized use. It will also prevent accidental drowning of smaller kids, toddlers, and even family pets. Not following the regulations will subject a homeowner to fines and other legal actions.

Life Saver recommends reviewing the Uniform Code provisions relating to swimming pools found here: https://www.dos.ny.gov/dcea/pdf/PoolsumUC0708.pdf. If you have questions related to pool fence installations or need help in choosing the right pool fencing materials, call us at (516) 766-5336.
