Having a pool fence installed in your backyard is a must for any homeowner in New York who owns a pool. Drownings are one of the leading causes of deaths in children. Which is why parents and guardians should keep in mind that just because a pool is closed for the season, doesn’t mean an accidental drowning can’t happen.

Whether you already have a mesh pool fence installed in your backyard, or you are considering having one installed this year, you may be wondering if they can survive harsh northeast winters. While some fences may weaken or even collapse under the weight of heavy snow, Life Saver’s pool fences are durable enough to withstand harsh winter conditions.

Our fences are easily removable and can be taken down, rolled up and stored for the winter months. However, this is not necessary since our mesh is made from the strongest industrial mesh currently available on the market. In fact, it has a tensile strength of over 270 pounds per square inch, and a mesh weave that is made from a strong nylon basket weave with a polyvinyl coating ensuring that the mesh is weather proof even from extreme cold. The mesh is securely mounted on solid core reinforced aluminum poles. Additionally, the poles we use are triple-reinforced for a more solid installation. Third-party testing has shown that they are by far the strongest removable pool fence poles in the industry.

In addition to a pool fence, it is ideal to also secure you pool with a weight bearing pool cover, which will not only keep debris out of your pool, but also will support the weight of a person should they walk on the cover. It is also a good idea to lock your pool gate in order to deter children, pets or anyone else from entering the pool area.

Pool safety is critical all year round, even after your pool has been closed for the season! Rest assured that our mesh fencing can withstand even the harshest winter. If you need to install new pool fencing, contact us today at (516) 766-5336.

As the months grow colder and with your pool closed, pool safety and drowning prevention may not be on the forefront of your mind. However, as a homeowner with a pool in your yard, you can never afford to stop thinking about pool safety.

Here are some tips for preparing your pool for the winter months and practicing pool safety all year round.

First and foremost, if you haven’t already it’s time to install a pool fence around your pool. Not only is this one of the first steps you should do in ensuring your home is safe for your family, it is a vital component to water safety and drowning prevention.

You may have already covered your pool by now, however if you haven’t done so with a weight bearing pool cover, you may want to reconsider your choice. This type of cover will not only keep debris out of your pool, but also will support the weight of a person should they walk on the cover. If the pool cover you are using is not weight bearing, you run the risk of someone becoming trapped within the cover should they try to walk on it.

Another safety precaution to take is to lock your pool gate. Simply closing your gate and assuming no one will enter the pool area is not enough. Lock the gate to deter children, pets or anyone else from entering the pool.

It is also a good idea to reinforce to your family that the pool is off-limits during the cooler months. Put away all pool toys, store any pool games and even pool maintenance items like nets or skimmers. Anything that is normally associated with the pool should be secured away in a shed or other storage area.

If you are in the Northeast, and have already closed your pool for the season or are preparing to close your swimming pool for the winter, this is a great time to reinforce the layers of protection you currently have in place and add any you are missing.

Pool safety is critical all year round, even after your pool has been closed for the season! If you need to install new pool fencing, contact us today at (516) 766-5336.

We are the largest and most respected pool fence company in the Northeast. This did not happen by accident. It happened by caring about what we do for our customers and our community. It happened by having the best product available and doing the very best installations, and committing our services to our customers for as long as they own a Life Saver pool fence.

Today, businesses are ranked or rated through customer reviews online. The consumer is much more savvy today and much more informed. This is why they rely so much on other people’s reviews of products and services. Years ago businesses would brag about how great they are through advertising in newspapers, magazines, mailings, radio and T.V. However today, consumers heavily rely on online reviews from people who have actually experienced the product, service and installation from a company whom they have experienced.

In today’s business world, in order to excel in business, a business owner needs to realize that the customer is now in control of how good there product and services are. It is the consumer who now has the control of how well a company does. However getting good reviews takes much more work than getting bad reviews. People are much more inclined to talk about a bad experience than a great one.

Getting a review from a customer for what was promised and what was paid for is more difficult than you think. In order to get a great review the business must give great service, great installation and great product beyond the customer’s expectations. It takes an entire staff of employers and employees to have a great expectations mindset to constantly wow their customers and continue getting great reviews.

I would like to say thank you to all of our Life Saver Pool Fence customers who took the time to write a review for us. It really does help us grow, and means so much to us. Thank You!

Child safety and drowning are major concerns for every parent on Long Island. While swimming pools provide hours of fun for the family, it is important that we are aware of the risks associated with having a pool at home. Especially if you have small children at home, a child safety fence is a must have. With so many of the storms occurring around the country, it’s time to make sure everything is installed correctly and certainly undamaged.

Proper Maintenance Is The Answer: Safety Is Not A One Time Event

Installing a quality pool fence helps prevent unauthorized access to the pool and avoids accidental drowning. If you already have one, it is important to regularly check for damages as a damaged pool fence poses a drowning risk. And just like anything else around our homes, keeping it in good condition requires proper maintenance.

Remember that your fence is installed close to your pool and is exposed to water and other chemicals which can damage your fencing. Depending on the type of fence you installed, some of them requires a high level of maintenance to keep in good working condition.

Here are some tips on how you can keep your pool fence in great shape:

Ask your pool fence installer for suggestions on how to properly clean your fencing materials. Cleaning helps eliminate the health hazard that dirt carries to your children.

Regularly check for possible gaps in the fence.

Check frequently for holes especially if you are using a mesh fence.

Check to see if the gates still lock and close properly.

Ensure pool alarms are working properly. Check if it needs new batteries.

If your fence is damaged, call a pool fence contractor to make the necessary repairs and upgrades, or replace them when needed. If you need to replace them, consider using a temporary pool fence. This promotes child safety around the pool while work is ongoing.

Owning a swimming pool comes with a great responsibility. You need to make sure your pool barriers are in great shape. A pool fence may not guarantee complete protection but it keeps unsupervised children from getting into your pool, keeping them from harm.

Life Saver will be happy to take your questions on how to maintain and repair damaged swimming pool fence to maximize child safety. Or if you need to install new pool fencing, contact us today at (516) 766-5336. While we are getting into the Fall season in New York, there is still plenty of time to have an installation performed.

You take your eyes off of a child and lot can happen in an instant. As parents, we are busy, we are multi-tasking and we have a lot on our mind, all while we watch over our children. In fact, at one customer visit, as we explained the benefits of pool safety to a couple on Long Island, a youngster tripped, falling into the pool. It was a very scary moment and quite an inflection point as parents for the young couple. As the owner of Life Saver Pool Fence New York, it reminds me that parents need to “Prioritize.” And they need to seek out safety measures “early and often.”

Now, there are many reasons why you might want to install a pool fence in your Long Island home. There are also local regulations that require homeowners to secure their pool with a safety fence equipped with a self-closing and self-latching gate. We have discussed this in past articles: “Swimming Pool Barrier Safety Requirements” & “Why Install A Self-Closing And Self-Latching Pool Fence Gate?“. In addition to following the law, there are additional reasons:

The safety of house guests

The safety of domestic animals and pets

The safety of other animals, in the wild

Privacy concerns

Beyond these practical issues, homeowners face the challenge of selecting what type of pool safety fence they should install. By the way, remember that if you are in the Hamptons or out East on long Island, some of you will have other bodies of water near your home such as ponds, beaches, canals etc. Outside of New York, in more tropical environments, there is the possible risk of other animals coming on your property from the bodies of water themselves (e.g. reptiles).

If you are new to the market for pool fencing, some of the options you may see are as follows below.

Pool Fence Types

There are different kinds of swimming pool fences based on the type of materials they are made of. Fences can be made of wood, mesh, steel, and glass.

Wooden Fences

If your pool is designed with a nature theme, wooden fences do exist. However, this type of fence does not last longer compared to glass or steel. You might need to replace them after a certain number of years.

Mesh Pool Fences

If you have smaller children at home, installing a mesh pool fence is recommended and is the best option. They are durable and offer greater protection. Toddlers will not be able to crawl under or climb over unlike with other fence types. We believe strongly in these types of fences and supply a rrange of them at many budget levels that parents can afford.

Steel Fences

If you want to install a pool fence that offers a good amount of privacy, a steel fence is the right option. However, take note that this type of fence would need maintenance as they can become rusty.

Glass Safety Fences

There is also the option of installing a glass pool fence. However, this type of fence does not provide a good amount of privacy since you can see right through it. They are also expensive, require frequent maintenance, and glass can be dangerous and shatter.

Life Saver’s swimming pool safety fences provides privacy and are strong enough to keep smaller children and pets safe. We advise going with a proper mesh safety pool fence if you live in the Nassau County or Suffolk County area.

Many code guidelines state that you can use your property fence and the back of your house as the barrier for your swimming pool. However, the fence needs to be a minimum of 4’ high surrounding your property and then attaching to the 2 sides of your home, with a self-closing self-locking gate that has a child safety locking mechanism that is at the height of 54” from the ground.

Additionally, on many areas you also need to install an in-ground pool alarm and door alarms on all doors leading to the pool area from the home that is within the code fence barrier. Please check your local codes for accurate code information.

Although you satisfy your local code guidelines, is this truly safe for your children in your home?

Following your local ordinances might not be enough. Adult supervision and the use of door alarms and a pool alarm can also prevent children from drowning or near-drowning incidents. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that 69% of all child-related drowning’s occur when one or both parents are responsible for supervision. So supervision alone is not enough. It can and does fail.

Door alarms are mounted high on the doors leading to the pool area, so a child can’t reach them. And most come with a bypass button that can be pushed giving the user time to open the door, pass through and close the door without the alarm sounding. However, sometimes people dismantle them for many reasons such as they can’t leave the door open and use their screen door to let fresh air in. Or older children and guests constantly open the door and sound the alarm.

In-ground pool alarms sound outside by the pool and send an RF frequency to an indoor receiver that sounds as well. When using the pool, the user can put the alarm in sleep mode by pushing a button and removing the alarm from the pool. If the alarm doesn’t go back in after swimming it is useless. And pool alarms work off of a water disturbance. This means there are sometimes false alarms that can go off. Even in the middle of the night. The causes of false alarms can be, a duck lands in the pool, high wind or even heavy rain. Many users end up not using these alarms for these reasons.

Layers of Protection is the ultimate defense against child drownings. The more layers you have, the safer your children will be.

Consider this scenario, it’s the summer and you’re having a BBQ with some family and friends with young children running around the backyard. You’re going in and out of the kitchen, so you deactivated the door alarm and left the door open to use your screen door. And you also removed the pool alarm so guests can use the swimming pool. In this situation, you now rendered all of your pool safety devices useless, only depending on direct adult supervision. So your BBQ now is nothing more than a day of work. A job of Life Guarding, chasing toddlers every time they get near the pool, and more than likely constantly shouting, “Get away from that pool”.

Now your family fun area has become nothing more than a stressful chore. All that planning and designing of this oasis away from the world turned into a day of worry, shouting and chasing. It doesn’t need to be this way.

Now consider this other scenario. You have a Life Saver Pool Fence system surrounding your swimming pool. It has a self-closing self-latching gate. Adult guests can enter the pool area, and the gate closes and locks so unsupervised children can’t enter. You’re having your BBQ, you’re not worried, not stressful, and not chasing toddlers or yelling at them either. You’re just enjoying your BBQ with family and friends. The kids that are outside the fence are running around having fun because they feel protected and are free to run around safely. And even though your still constantly watching them, you feel more at ease and much less stressful. You now have achieved peace of mind, not only for yourself but for your family and friends as well.

A Life Saver Pool Fence not only provides you and your family with an important level of protection, but it also gives you the freedom to enjoy your backyard once again.

Spring is just around the corner, are you thinking of installing an in-ground swimming pool? Or give your existing pool a brand new look? Whether you want to install an in-ground pool or renovate an existing pool, it is important that you consider pool safety, especially if you have toddlers at home. You have to know all of the different requirements associated with installing a residential swimming pool. Aside from obtaining legal permits from your local municipality, you also need to set up a pool safety fence around your pool.

In New York, due to safety regulations, it is illegal to build an in-ground pool without a barrier or fence. Any outdoor residential swimming pool must have a barrier that will completely surround the pool and obstructs unsupervised access to the swimming pool. The spaces between the bottom of the fence and the ground must be less than 2 inches, and any opening should be small enough to prevent the passage of a small child.

It is also suggested that a self-closing and self-latching gate be installed. All pool gates should also be secured with childproof sufficient lock to prevent entry when the pool is not in use. You can also install a pool alarm to notify you should a child open the gate.

How Tall Should Pool Fencing Be And Why?

It is required that pool fences should be at least 48 inches or 4 feet high and must satisfy the requirements specified by local laws. The fence can be higher than 4 feet but not lower. This is to make swimming pools inaccessible to unsupervised children or unauthorized use. It will also prevent accidental drowning of smaller kids, toddlers, and even family pets. Not following the regulations will subject a homeowner to fines and other legal actions.

Life Saver recommends reviewing the Uniform Code provisions relating to swimming pools found here: https://www.dos.ny.gov/dcea/pdf/PoolsumUC0708.pdf. Child safety car seats need to be checked to make sure they are fitted properly and secure at all times. A swimming pool safety fence needs to be checked as well.

Preseason maintenance for your removable mesh safety fence needs to be done every year before opening your pool.

5 Pool Safety Fence Preseason Maintenance Tips

Here is a list of some of the things you should be doing:

Are all the pool fence poles properly seated into the sleeves in your pool deck?

Sometimes when your pool service company puts on your winter safety cover they take parts of the fence down but they don’t put it back up properly. The bottom of the mesh safety fence should be sitting directly on top of the pool deck surface. If they are not, all you need to do is to remove the section of fence that is not properly seated. Then using a garden hose with a jet spray attachment, spray the hole in the pool deck and this will force out any dirt and debris from the pool fence deck sleeve. You can also take a wet cloth and wipe off any dirt from the end of the pool fence poles that go into the pool fence deck sleeves. Now put your section of pool fence back up, making sure all poles are fully inserted and then reattach the snap latches.

Check all latch connection points for the entire pool fencing system.

These are the latches that connect one section of the removable pool fence to the other. The pool fence latches should all be connected to each section of the Life Saver Pool Fence. The latches should also be tight enough so a child could not undo them. In most cases, if it’s difficult for an adult then it’s virtually impossible for a toddler.

Check your self-closing, self-latching pool fence gate for proper function.

Make sure the safety fence gate is fully inserted on both sides into the pool fence deck sleeve holes. Then open the gate and make sure that it self closes. The hinges on the pool safety gate can be adjusted to have the gate close faster or slower using a flat head screw driver on each hinge.

Make sure your pool fence gate automatically latches after each opening.

Sometimes when the safety fence is removed and reinstalled the gate may not latch because a pole shifted causing a misalignment of about 1/8″ – 1/4″. To fix this, all you need to do is get a phillips head screwdriver and find the vertical and horizontal adjustment screws on the pool fence gate latch and latch body. Please see enclosed adjustment instructions.

Make sure your pool fence looks good!

Look over the entire pool safety fence from top to bottom, making sure it is tight and also looks good. All Life Saver Pool Fence customers have a lifetime warranty on the product and the installation. If you have any questions or can’t figure something out, all you need to do is call us. Remember we exist because of customers like you!!

Many customers do not take a self-closing gate at the time of pool fence installation to avoid paying extra money. Instead, they choose a manual opening or Layback section which can be used by unlatching the pool fence where 2 sections meet and folding back a 3′ piece, then slipping it into an extra hole to hold it on the pool deck while taking a swim.

However, if you do not close the pool fence back and latch it shut when you’re done swimming, an entry way is then left open for a toddler to pass through. Having a Self-Closing Gate adds much more safety and benefits to your removable pool fence system.

Here are a few reasons why it is important to install a self-closing and self-latching pool fence gate:

Safety and Convenience

The Consumer Product Safety Commission always recommends a self-closing, self-latching, key lockable gate in any pool fence system. It’s much easier to get into the pool area for an adult. And it automatically closes and locks after each pass through. Our removable pool fence gate can be locked with a key when not in use.

High Locking Mechanism

Most single truss pool fence gates are flimsy, and the latch needs to be located in the center of the gate. This means the locking mechanism is the same height as the child safety fence, making it easier for a toddler to reach. The Life Saver Pool Fence Gate lock can be mounted up to 8″ higher than the mesh safety fence itself. All pool fence codes call for the lock to be 6″ higher than the fence. Because of our double truss gate and frame made from 1-1/4″ square stock heavy gauge aluminum we can ensure proper closure and reliability of our pool fence gate.

Attractive

Most removable pool fence gates are made from the pool fence poles welded together. Using these pool fence poles makes the gate wobbly, unattractive, unsteady and not reliable. Life Savers exclusive double truss 1-1/4″ heavy gauge square stock aluminum Arched Gate is the most attractive, Elegant and Safest Pool Safety Gate available anywhere. Child safety pool fences and gates can be attractive and aesthetically pleasing.

Lifetime Warranty

Life saver’s pool fence gate comes with a full lifetime warranty, not only on the gate itself but also on the installation.

A self-closing pool fence gate can be fit into your existing mesh safety fence anywhere in the pool fence system that you want.
